Thousands of passengers could have there festive plans ruined due to a strike by RMT rail union.

Britain’s most extensive train that runs its service from Penzance to Aberdeen will be on strike which also includes train managers, conductors and catering staff.

The strike will take place on Friday next week which is the last day of work for most people so they will be looking to go out and join family and friends wherever they may be going and will expect to use the service.

Although the train does not serve through London it is one of Britain’s most used trains carrying 32 million passengers a year.

The depute into which why the strike is happening is over a number of issues including staffing rosters in Manchester.

Bob Crow, the union’s general secretary said : “As a result of the total collapse of industrial relations across a whole raft of matters at RMT we are in dispute with Cross Country and the union has had no option but to ballot members for action and with a mandate secured we are pushing on with a 24 hour strike.

“We will continue to apply pressure on the company until all of these issues are resolved to our satisfaction.

“RMT will not sit back while procedures are used to harass and dismiss members, important changes are imposed rather than negotiated and technological and operational changes are not recognised and rewarded.”

With the Olympic Games coming and tourist looking for some where to stay its not the best to to be ranked as the most expensive place to live for 24 hours. This comes from tripindex survey which looked at the costs of hotel rooms, food and taxis in and around London.

This rank might come because hotels know there will be a lot of tourist in London for the 17 days of the Olympic Games. Even New York is lower which is known for its expensive lifestyle.

‘The list shows that many Asian cities, along with some European cities – like Warsaw and Sofia – are very affordable once you’re on the ground said Emma Shaw of TripAdvisor

Cheapflight.co.uk travel expert has given up her time to tell us some key tips on flights; she said flight compatibility with family friendly facilities before you start booking. Check if pushchairs can be taken into the cabin, also if you have really young kids some airlines offer kids free toys and kids meal for no extra costs.

One key tip she gave us was to keep an eye on the euro zone pick destination outside the Euro zone like turkey and Egypt. Family holidays are expensive when limited to peak travel times.

The last thing she added was: if you have young kid’s family beach holidays are worth doing the research for to check if the beach is suitable for children.

Hotel booked? Check. Travel insurance? check. Sun tan lotion, sunglasses, reading books all packed? Check, check and check.

Foreign currency? Oh, I will sort out that when I arrive.

When it comes to purchasing holiday cash, many of us leave this till the last moment and sometimes completely ignore it until we have arrived at the airport.

According to a YouGov survey, the most popular choices for consumers looking to buy their holiday spending money before they went away included visiting the local high street, such as a travel agent, or alternatively visiting the Post Office.

Just as you will look for the best deals on hotels and flights, you should do the same when it comes to purchasing foreign currency.

It is a commodity which is often lumbered with poor exchange rates and high transaction fees.

Whatever you do, if you are looking to get the best rate then do not consider buying your holiday cash at the airport as it is the most expensive way.

“
Start Quote

Knowing where the rates are heading is not an exact science”

Timing is a key issue and you would be wise to start thinking about currency at least a month before you fly off.

As a first step, taking a look at the exchange rates would be a good start as you want to maximise how much local currency you can get for your pound.

Looking at the euro, until relatively recently the single currency had maintained its strength.

We have recommended that customers purchase their euros as soon as possible whenever they saw the pound make gains against the single currency.

If you do pay in pounds, the merchant will charge you to convert the local currency into sterling and then charge you again to convert back to the local currency.

This process is called dynamic currency conversion (DCC), and in summer 2011 research by Caxton FX found that 37% of Britons were still being bitten by hidden DCC charges.

The Mexican legislature passed one of the strongest national climate-change laws so far on 19 April. Mexico, which ranks 11th in the world for both the size of its economy and its level of carbon emissions, joins the United Kingdom in having legally binding emissions goals aimed at stemming the effects of climate change.

After three years of debate and revisions, the bill passed in Mexico’s lower house with a vote of 128 for and 10 against, and was later passed unanimously by the Senate. The new law contains many sweeping provisions to mitigate climate change, including a mandate to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by 30% below business-as-usual levels by 2020, and by 50% below 2000 levels by 2050.

Despite concerns about Mexico’s ability to enforce the legislation, experts point out that the bill can already be seen as a successful response to the 2010 UN Climate Change Conference in Cancún.

“Mexico was widely credited for helping to rescue the international effort in Cancún. But some noted the lack of corresponding action domestically. Now Mexico has something to show at home too,” says Diringer.

The act also establishes a commission to oversee implementation, and encourages development of a carbon-trading scheme. Although there was initial resistance from Mexico’s steel and cement industries, the bill passed with bipartisan support.
